church and what?
 (United States)
I am wondering do any of your churches attempt to place an emphasis on spiritual formation? If so, does this involve a certain kind of teaching, practices or disciples? I find that my church does think they are doing spiritual formation, but that simply means they encourage people to practice spiritual disciplines. Youralls thoughts.

I think too many times, churches try too hard to "organize" spirtual formation and in that, making it too commercial! Spiritual formation is free in the sense that God handles it. Basically, I think the a church should definitely discuss and emphasize it, but let the Lord take control, and what happens...happens. If it is made my the Holy Spirit...It has to be right, and it will work for the community of your church.

I hear what you are saying. However, I wonder if the idea that spiritual formation is brought forth by the Holy Spirit simply means we just take a completely passive role in the process. I certainly believe we (individuals) can do nothing to ultimately change/grow ourselves. The Holy Spirit is the agent of change. Thus, it would appear that the church can do nothing to cause spiritual formation in and of itself. But, just as the individual can participate in the process of spiritual formation brought forth by the Spirit by opening themselves to his work (whether through prayer, community, reading of the text), so to it would seem that the church could help individuals within its congregation to open to the Spirit's work. Certainly, we would agree that the church can do things to hamper the Spirit's work, and if so it would appear that there are things it can do to be more open than not. Thus, I would agree that the church attempts to structure spiritual formation to much. The answer is not simply, "Well our people seem to not be growing in Christ. I guess we should start a new event/program that will solve the problem." But there are certainly things that can be done to aid rather than hamper, and this is what I am interested in. How can a church do this without the answer simply being a new program? What can the church do to more fully cooperate with this amazing work of the Spirit who is in our midst? Do any of you see your church doing anything you believe fits this bill?

Our church society seems to be predominately program oriented. Most have been taught that way.  Programs are good but tend to be focused on the symtoms, not the cause of lack of spirituality.  It is like most medical practices today. Quickly diagnose the symtoms, and prescribe something to releave the symtoms (or dare I say, hide the cause).  Spiritual formation or growth is something that is "modeled" and "caught". It is a lifestyle, a way of life.  We can train, educate, etc. to gain head knowledge, but without a "change of heart", our efforts are futile. The disciplines are simply the tools or means used to help use execise and strenghten our spirtual lifes. As we abide in the Vine (Christ), we the braches bear the fruit.   To sum up, Jesus taught by example, living and modeling the life and journey that we are to follow.  The best we can do is draw as close to Him as possibe and allow Him to live through us. As we model Jesus, we must pray that those God has joined us with, will catch the vision of Him and choose to draw closer.

HE IS LORD! PRASE GOD!
